THE race for the APS Growth Seaside Championship was thrown wide open yesterday following the dramatic withdrawal of top seed Peter Clarke. The battle between Clarke and four-time winner Pat Serret fizzled out yesterday when the former was forced to retire with illness. For 47 year old Serret, who moved around the court with speed and guile that belied his age, it provided a clear run to the quarter-finals. Click here for link

Manly Daily: Young and old a hit28 December 2007

It was on for young and old at the Manly Seaside Championships yesterday, with youngsters and two "super-vets" dominating the day's play. In a promising sign for Australian tennis, four kids aged 16 or under made it into the fourth round, while two of the tournament's most senior players also proved they still had it. Pat Serret and Neil Smith, both aged 47, showed age was no barrier by beating their younger rivals. But it was the performance of youngsters Kyle Stoker, 16, James Duckworth, 15, Matt Barton, 16, and James Queenan, 16, that stole the show yesterday.  Click here for link

Local hope Jimmy Rigg and perennial finalist Jurek Stasiak were both beaten in shock upsets, while fifth seed Dane Fernandez fell victim to a virus that knocked him about. Rigg, the seventh seed, was a shock loser to Ryde's David Barclay 6-3, 6-4, and Stasiak, the second seed, was beaten by 15-year-old rising star James Duckworth 4-6, 6-3, 4-6.  Click here for link
