He Has Wheels! New(ish)
member Shaun Roberts knows all about speed and
looks set to demonstrate this when he takes to
the court as part of Manly Men’s 1/2 team in the
2008 Badge season. The Adelaide boy played
tennis throughout his teen years and then quit
to take up go-kart racing (as one does).
Running
short of the readies after three years lead him
into mechanics where, with one year as a
workshop apprentice under his belt, he managed
to secure a job on a German race team. Competing
in the Le Mans European and American series, and
three-time entry in the Le Mans 24 hour race
lead Shaun into working for a European Formula 3
team, competing against drivers such as Lewis
Hamilton (current McLaren F1 driver) and
Christian Klein (ex-Red Bull F1 driver).
Following that he worked in Formula 3000, a
support race for F1 (European leg). Finding all
this a little tame, Shaun took up tennis again
after returning to Adelaide in 2005. When he
made the move to Sydney (initially playing for
Mosman as a result of momentary relocation
confusion), Shaun quit the automotive industry
and moved into web design.
“I have been made
very welcome since coming to Manly Tennis Club.
It’s been great to hit with high quality players
and challenge myself to become a better player,”
says Shaun, who’s looking forward to making a
good contribution to the club this season!

Fish with racquet!
MLTC member Brian Matthew’s
sizzling forehand took second place to his
sizzling scissor kick on the weekend, when he
took third place in his age group at the North
Sydney regionals for the AUSSI Masters Swimming
NSW. Congratulations to Brian, who has already
qualified for the FINA World Masters
Championships in Perth in April.
If the start of Badge doesn’t divert him, we
might all have to look out for the Nike
sponsorship to change to Speedo come April!
