Owen’s Captain’s Comments.
What a
great tournament we have had in 2011 with the greatest
number of entrants and events ever, in the long history of
our club. When the Special Mixed Doubles was scheduled for
Dean Edwards/Narelle Kinsey to play Meridith Roberts and Stu
Charlton, last Sunday, all players showed up except Dean.
Where was he? Unfortunately Dean was in Royal North Shore
hospital undergoing a procedure to drain fluid from his
brain. His condition was critical, but he came through with
flying colours and was there today to watch all the events
on final’s day. Dean on behalf of all the members, we wish
you well and hope you will be back on the courts soon.
Please take it easy and look after yourself.
Today we
witnessed some great finals with the Open Ladies Doubles
going to Julia and Jane against Katie and Nicola. Well done
Julia and Jane. Katie played the “volley of the match” with
the ball turning a 90 degree angle and landing on the
outside edge of the doubles sideline.
After a
short delay, the Men showed up a little late ready to play
in the Open Mixed Doubles due to a change with the
scheduling. Ryan and Jane were triumphant over Tom and
Nicola. It was a fun match to watch with some brilliant
exchanges of ground strokes and volleys. On court one we
witnessed a great 3 set match in the Men’s 45+ singles
between new Member Arthur Siannos and president Nick
Debenham.( now our marathon man ) .Nick was recovering from
a 3 set Marathon in the Men’s Special Singles where he lost
to Paul Davies in three sets. (Paul was by the way, was the
winner of our best racket abuse competition)
In the
Ladies singles we witnessed a great final between Jane and
Nicola. Both of these players had previously played in the
Ladies Doubles and Mixed Doubles and were obviously very
tired when they played their third event in a row. Nicola
with youth on her side came through with a 2 set straight
victory and became our 2011 Ladies Club Champion.
Congratulations Nicola.
“The man of
the tournament” or should I say “the young boy of the
tournament” must go to Boyd Blackburn. “Boydy” as we call
him had the tournament of his life playing a total of 12
matches and reaching the finals in two events. He and Scott
were unlucky to loose the Open Men’s Doubles going down to
Ryan and James in three. He lost in the Open Men’s Singles
to Mark Upton, but came back to defeat him in the Special
Singles semi-finals. He lost his final to Dave Sullivan and
Milton Darocha. As the terminator would say “I’ll be back”
Watch out next year, Milton and Dave, if you are drawn
against ‘Boydy”. Boyd’s success must be at least partly
attributed to his two grandmothers, Margaret and Margaret
who attended every one of his matches and encouraged him to
do his very best. This he did, and of course his Mum and Dad
helped a lot. All the members wish you good luck Boyd and we
hope in the future you will be playing in the Men’s Open
Singles Final. That will make the Margarets really smile.
The “Match
of the Day” was the Men’s Singles Final, where we witnessed
a display of tennis at a very high level. Defending Champion
Ryan Mitchell hit some great serves, backhands and volleys,
but unfortunately his forehand was not up to par as it was
last year when he won the Club Singles Championship. We will
excuse Ryan as we know he have just returned from his
honeymoon. On behalf of all the members, we say
congratulations to you and your lovely bride. We hope you
will be able to regain your title in 2012 and play 1/1 Badge
for MLTC. Full credit however, must go to young Dimitri,
who served well, attacked the ball on every occasion and
played superb tennis in the third set. Dimitri, you made
your parents very proud today when you became the MLTC Club
Champion 2011. You are so lucky to have such supportive
parents.
In the
Mixed Special Doubles we congratulate Robin and Tricia Koh
with a straight set victory over Meredith Roberts and Stu
Charlton. Tricia and Robin were the defending champions and
have now claimed the title two years in a row.
Congratulations Trish and Robin. You are two great additions
to MLTC and good luck to you both. Robin, enjoy your
Christmas with your parents and tell them they are very
welcome to come and play at MLTC any time they are in
Sydney.
Other events;
The Men’s
Open Doubles was a great match to watch with both teams
executing great volleys and overheads. The first set went to
Dimitri and Simon 6/3, but Veterans Geoff and Richard won
the second set 6/3. The final set went to Simon and Dimitri
6/3. So intense was their concentration, they played non
stop through quite a heavy shower. All other results are up
on the Club Noticeboard, with accompanying photographs,
courtesy of Harvey. Also check our website.
Thank you:
George
Paul, for organising a great luncheon.
Thank you:
Harvey, for
being on the tournament committee and preparing the typed
draws and information for the Club Tournament website. Every
Monday for the past five weeks Harvey and I have spent many
hours recording scores, entering results and scheduling
players etc: for our website. The great success of our club
tournament was, in part, helped by Harvey’s input, in
preparing all the results and schedules. The programs he has
put in place will make our 2012 so much easier to organise.
Thank you:
Tony
Hardacre, our Club Treasurer for your efficient collection
of entry fees and ensuring that all competitors were paid up
Club Members.
Thank You
Scott and Camilla:
Your
cooperation and help with the tournament was enormous and
all our members appreciate your help in making our 2011 Club
Tournament so successful.
We hope
‘the rain will stop” for you soon.

All the
spectators who came to support their favourite player. Eg.
Simon Haes’ Mum and Dad. Simon!! It is so great that your
Mum and Dad still check up on you.
I guess
that is why you did not abuse your racket today.

be finalised:Men’s
45+ Singles Richard Steeds v Geoff Dunstan. This match is
scheduled for Saturday 26th November at 3pm.
The final
set of the Men’s Special Doubles Coleman/Upton versus Langby/Charlton
